Description:

The Senior Engineer (SE) is a senior level role for mechanical engineering personnel. The position encompasses a fast track program of knowledge and performance with regards to Offshore Drilling and associated well control equipment as well as the company's systems and processes.

The employee will interact with Customers, Suppliers, Field Service Engineers, Technicians, Management and Consultants. The employee will give guidance and expert advice to others in the department.

The employee will also be expected to work unsupervised and will be required to supervise other company personnel.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide oversight to design and manufacture of specialized equipment and customer orders;
  2. Oversee multiple projects, including your own and provide guidance;
  3. Mentor junior mechanical engineers and technicians;
  4. Maintain a high level of safety ethic and always ensure a safe working environment;
  5. Initially, shadow Project & Mechanical Engineers, Field Service Technicians and Subsea Engineers to gain a fundamental understanding of the design, operation, inspection and repair of Capital Drilling Equipment as well as all the processes, procedures, etc. of the Company;
  6. Conduct in-house development, including strength calculations (from first principles and FEA/Simulation when required), 3D CAD modelling and drawing using SolidWorks, manufacturing data pack generation (incl. BOM’s, QCP’s, Works Instructions, Manuals) and vendor management during fabrication stage;
  7. Physically participate in carrying out inspection and maintenance processes to gain a fundamental understanding of them;
  8. Manage maintenance, repair, design and manufacturing projects from inception through to delivery, initially with the assistance of management but ultimately unaided; this will include, but will not be limited to, procurement, logistics, resource planning, scheduling, data book generation and submission;
  9. Giving expert technical advice to Technicians and coaching new Technicians;
  10. Monitor compliance to applicable codes, practices, QC policies, procedures and specifications;
  11. Manage personnel in a professional manner, fostering positive communication and relationships with team members;
  12. Detailed reporting and inspection report reviews; as well as regularly report and feedback to Management and the Customer on the progress of project;
  13. Review engineering deliverables and initiate appropriate corrective actions; draft new procedures as required;
  14. Ensure safe work practices are being adhered to at all times;

Authority:

  1. May override project inspection findings after review of findings in light of sound engineering principles and reference to SME’s
  2. May disposition project inspection reports based on reference to specifications
  3. Procurement – allowance to procure items as per company policies

Accountability:

The employee has an obligation to account for his/her activities, accept responsibility for them and to disclose the results in a transparent manner.

The employee is also accountable for finances and property in his/her care.

The employee reports directly to the head of the Engineering Department or other management as required.

Training:

The Employee will be expected to undergo training on any skills shortfall identified during appraisals which may entail after hours attendance. Training will be provided at the company’s cost. Any time spent on training will be paid as per remuneration salary and no overtime is payable during training.

Training that is mandatory in this position is:

  1. Procedure knowledge checks
  2. Offshore survival HUET training

He/she will be an enthusiastic, efficient, committed individual with a strong background in engineering theory, design, project management, manufacturing and practical work experience, who can think practically and innovatively, with strong leadership qualities.

The following are the minimum skills required to perform the function:

  1. An advanced knowledge of the MS Office suite (especially Word, Excel, Teams);
  2. Excellent written communicator (email; technical report writing; whats app etc);
  3. Excellent level of English, both written and verbal;
  4. Sound understanding of 3D CAD packages, in particular SolidWorks
  5. Sound understanding of FEA Software, in particular SolidWorks Simulation
  6. Sound understanding of Engineering Calculations Software, in particular Mathcad, Matlab or similar
  7. Exposure to ASME VIII, API and Class Rules (ABS & DNV) in respect of design and manufacture
  8. Sound understanding of fabrication, boiler making/welding, precision machining.
  9. Excellent organizational, planning & time management skills.

Qualifications:

  1. Mechanical Engineering degree or diploma.

Experience :

  1. Six to eight years’ experience in a relatable engineering environment.

Safety

The Employee is expected to act as a safety ambassador and ensure that Company personnel and sub-contractors abide by Company and Customer safety policies as well as local legislation.

This position can require extension travel away from base for prolonged periods of time.
