Minimum requirements
BVSc degree from the University of Pretoria
SAVC registered
Experience as a registered veterinarian in a practice is desirable, but not required.
Excellent medical and surgical skills.
Significant continuing education achievements, beyond licensing requirements.
Excellent communication skills with both staff and clients.
Ability to work as a team member as well as a veterinarian.
Working knowledge of and interest in the business aspect of a veterinary practice.
Strong leadership abilities.
Willingness to work emergencies or extra hours when needed.
Important factors:
Work requires lifting and carrying animals (will be assisted by other staff members in lifting animals over 15kg).
Walks or stands for extended periods or time; frequently works in a bent position.
Working conditions:
May be exposed to unpleasant odours, noises and animal faeces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.
RESPONSIBILITIES: MEDICAL AND SURGICAL
Provides compassionate care to patients.
Works with veterinary practice owner to set practice medical policies and procedures.
Performs physical examinations; diagnoses physical condition and presents diagnostic and treatment alternatives to the client.
Performs medical, surgical and dental procedures; provides emergency services in accordance with clinic policy.
Provide pre-surgical examination and post-surgical monitoring. Monitor and treat in-hospital patients.
Interprets the results of laboratory procedures and determines the appropriate protocol based on the results; reads radiographs and interprets Ultrasound, CBC and Biochemistry; prescribes medications.
Promptly and accurately updates client records.
Add prescriptions of chronic medication to the patient file with dosage when charging the medication for the first time.
Add weight and body condition score for each patient in clinical history.
Give basic clinical history with quotations during consultations.
Charge using protocols.
Add notes to patients such as aggressive, allergic or on insurance.
Add laboratory results.
Add radiographs.
Plans and carries out a significant program of personal medical continuing education.
Monitor and maintain stock levels of the pharmacy.
Treating of own animals.
Pre-purchase Health check of own animals.
Weekly health monitoring of animals.
CLIENT RELATIONS
Takes time to communicate effectively with clients, presenting them with treatment alternatives and being sensitive to their emotional as well as financial status.
Sets an example for the staff in dealing with clients; promotes the concept of the client-centred environment.
Helps to develop new programs and processes that meet clients changing needs.
